In this post I’m going to tell a story about Pink Panther History.
Vera Lynn was a brave woman who became a singer for the soldiers in the British Army during the Second World War (WWII). Her songs were meant to lift up the spirits of the soldiers. Two of her famous songs are “We shall meet again” and “There will be bluebirds flying over the white cliffs of Dover”.
Nazi Germany was at the height of its power. One by one the countries of Europe fell defeated by the German Army. Great Britain appeared more difficult to capture as it was separated from the European mainland by the English Channel. Due to this, Hitler negotiated with England. Hitler proposed that Britain does not interfere and does not help the other European countries while Germany conquered them. In return, Germany would not attack England.
The King of England (George VI) agreed. The British parliament agreed. The Prime Minister of England, Winston Churchill, refused to agree. Winston said Hitler is a wolf. You cannot trust Hitler. Winston said we will fight on the land, we will fight on the sea, we will fight in the air.
So England fought against Nazi Germany.
As the British and French were fighting the Germans, the Germans cornered them into Dunkirk. England sent its warship to rescue the British and French soldiers. However the German U boats were formidable. They sank England’s warship. England could not risk sending another warship which would inevitably be sunk. The German U boats communicated using the Enigma encryption. The Nazis used the Enigma machine to encode and decode messages. The Allies could not decipher what the Nazis were saying.
But leaving the thousands of Allied soldiers on Dunkirk to be killed by the Nazis would greatly reduce the Allies’ strength.
Vera Lynn’s songs “We will meet again” and “There will be bluebirds flying over the white cliffs of Dover” are very touching because the soldiers at the frontline fear they would not be able to be reunited with their families again.
Vera Lynn – We’ll Meet Again (Lyrics)
One by one the patriotic British sailors and fishermen sailed their own private boats across the English channel to rescue the soldiers trapped in Dunkirk. Unfortunately they could only rescue their own British citizens and could not rescue the French soldiers.
The breakthrough during the WWII came when the British engineer Alan Turing, the father of modern computing, cracked the code of the German Enima Machine. As a result, the Allies now became aware of the locations of the German U boats and were able to manoeuvre away safely. The Allies gathered their forces for D-Day when they would once again return to Normandy to fight the Germans. As the Allied soldiers performed the beaching operation, they were gunned down by the German soldiers from their embankments. It was a terrible and awesome day.
The White Cliffs of Dover – Lyrics – Vera Lynn
In Winston Churchill’s stirring speech, he proclaimed : if you are going through hell, keeping going. Never ever give up.
The Queen of England seldom gives speeches. She is fond of signing off with this phrase : we’ll meet again. I believe she also adores Vera Lynn’s songs.
